Memorandum to Mia Adjali, Josiah Beeman, Isaac Bivens, Committee for a Free Mozambique, Eileen Hanson, Chester Marcus, Bill Minter. Juel Nordby, Metz Rollins, Tim Smith, Southern Africa Committee, Jan Van Hoogstraten, Robert Van Leirop, Lucius Walker, Peter Weiss, and Gayraud Wilmore. The memorandum says all of us have been in touch with and have been of assistance in various ways to Sharfudine Khan over the last three or four years; at the present moment he is on his annual trip back home, both touching base at FRELIMO headquarters in Tanzania and spending some time inside liberated areas of Mozambique; all of us are fairly familiar with the work which Khan does as the representative of FRELIMO in the United States; he does a great deal of speaking and makes contacts all over the country with people actually or potentially sympathetic to the struggle; he also spends considerable time at the United Nations and in Washington. The memorandum says we all know it is impossible to carry on effective work without adequate finances; FRELIMO is not able to supply the funds to make the work of their representative here possible; they depend upon those of us who are supporters of this struggle for assistance; over the years ACOA has contributed a great deal. The memorandum says I am sure that Khan's expenses run around $1,000 a month; $1,500 would be a better objective; this covers all his expenses from his rent for his apartment and rent for the office, to printing expenses, travel expenses, telephone, food, etc. The memorandum says I have no idea how many of us may be putting some funds into support for this work, or how much may be going into it; I do think we would all profit if we could be a little better coordinated in our support for him; he is the only full-time representative of an African liberation movement assigned to the United States. The memorandum says I am raising two practical questions in this memorandum; one, in order to coordinate our efforts better, would it be advisable for those of us in proximity to one another to try to arrange a meeting where we could decide what we can jointly do to support the FRELIMO office?; two, can all of us, either personally or through our organizations, raise some funds to support Khan? The memorandum says ACOA will commit itself to contributing at least one month's needs. The memorandum says it isn't necessary to have the funds come into any central office; it can be contributed directly to Khan; however, it would help all of us if we know who is giving how much so that we can be sure the amount necessary is being covered; incidentally, there should be no confusion between money for the FRELIMO office here and money sent to Dar es Salaam; this communication is only about what is needed for Khan in the United States.
