The mailing says the last meeting of CFSA was held June 1st in the District Building; we discussed the film series and upcoming events; although there were several criticisms re. how we could have improved the film series it was generally judged a success and there was agreement that we should do another series in the early Fall; in the meantime we need to follow up on several requests from organizations that want us to give presentations to their groups. The mailing says the film showings at Martin Luther King Library averaged 40-50 people at each one, and people expressed interest in similar future events. The mailing says in coalition with SASP, TransAfrica, Washington Office on Africa and other local groups, CFSA is participating in the MANDELA COMMITTEE; this group was formed recently to organize a tribute/celebration for Nelson and Winnie Mandela on Saturday, July 16 (Nelson's b'day is the 18th and he's been in jail for 20 years). The mailing says at its June 6 meeting the Mandela Committee divided tasks: Sylvia Hill (SASP) is working on the program which will include several speakers and a music group to be followed by a reception; Rick Clemmons and Kevin Danaher are working on publicity; Gene Root is securing the rooms for the event; and Dumi Matabane is contacting African embassies for support; we need groups and individuals to be sponsors of the event for a minimum contribution of $10. The mailing says CFSA' s next event is a fundraising party to be held Saturday, June 25 at the home of Lynne Barbee/Connie Spheeris/Sam Zuckerman; Chris Root has taken primary responsibility for organizing this event and she needs plenty of help. The mailing says any petitions you still have for the city divestment bill should be turned in soon because the bill comes up for a vote later this month. The mailing discusses Wendy Simmons and SASP (Southern Africa Support Project).
