Its activities have included: hosting a Roxbury-based reception for U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan; joint sponsorship with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and with the U.S. African Studies Association, of speaker programs by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Susan Rice; co-sponsorship with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts of showings of six new films by African film makers; and co-sponsorship with the New England Community of Tanzanians of send-off reception for the new U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, Boston's own Rev. Charles Stith and Dr. Deborah Prothrow Stith. The BPAF is organizing the New-England Region's participation in "the National Summit on Africa." Enclosed is a document, THE NATIONAL SUMMIT ON AFRICA, which includes a section entitled THE NATIONAL SUMMIT ON AFRICA FUND-RAISING PROGRAMS. The National Public Education Campaign seeks $2 million for the Summit's national educational program, including public service announcements (PSAs) on television and radio, and in print with apolitical, positive messages about Africa and about the National Summit. The National Summit on Africa Fund seeks $4.4 million for the U.S./ African regional and national policy dialogues. Contributions to this campaign will be split appropriately between the Summit Secretariat, the national summit, and the regional summits (to which the Secretariat provides approximately $200,000). The Fund-Raising Secretariat is seeking contributions at three levels: National Partners at $500,000; Summit Partners at $250,000; and Summit Supporters at $100,000. National Summit on Africa Regional Funds seek $500,000 per region to assist each region in carrying out its summit and to promote the larger National Summit. The regional campaigns will be carried out independently by each Summit region with guidance from and cooperation with the national Fund-Raising Secretariat. Regional campaigns will seek partners are various financial levels. Donors may support specific programs and events.
