BUSINESS EXECUTIVES: WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN SOUTH AFRICA

Leaflet passed out at a protest seminar sponsored by the South African government to promote increased investment by U.S. businesses in South Africa and the Madison Hotel on October 11. The leaflet says: • Be in the forefront of labor unrest. South Africa's black unions enthusiastically focus on foreign companies, especially American ones. • Make your plant a bombing target. The liberation movement successfully bombed South Africa's two most heavily guarded industrial plants, the SASOL synfuels and Koeberg nuclear power plants. • Help fight in a civil war, on apartheid's side. You won't even have a choice. When the explosion comes, South African law says that key plants--yours?--will be commandeered by the government. • Buy a used reform from this government. The South African government says it is "reforming." At the same time, it states, flatly and categorically, that blacks will never vote or be citizens in their own land. • Become a divestment target. Meet students, nuns, clergymen, unionists, state legislators, college boards, city councilors. Fly around to the more than 25 states, cities and counties considering divesting your stock if you go into South Africa. • Gamble with your stockholders' money. South Africa is not covered by OPIC. • Get your crisis management experience now. In real life. The leaflet says unrest under apartheid is here to stay. The leaflet says SERIOUSLY, SOUTH AFRICA IS POLITICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY UNSTABLE, BLACK IMPATIENCE GROWS, WHITES ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO END APARTHEID. THE COUNTRY IS A POWDER KEG. The leaflet says the very low wages of black workers make South Africa a more profitable "investment climate" than other areas of the world; over 350 U.S. corporations (e.g., Ford, General Motors, IBM, Mobil) have subsidiaries in South Africa; they are concentrated in strategic sectors--nuclear technology, computers, oil and chemicals, transportation equipment--that create very few jobs for blacks yet provide necessary capital and technology to the white regime; although it is a crime for a South African to advocate withdrawal of foreign investment, black leaders such as Bishop Desmond Tutu have called for the total isolation of the apartheid regime. The leaflet says Americans in dozens of cities and states have been passing legislation prohibiting the investment of public funds in companies operating in South Africa; D.C. City Council Bill 5-18, if approved by Congress, will phase out D.C. pension fund money from investments in South Africa; we must become more aware of which U.S. companies are profiting from racism in South Africa and take action to make them change. The leaflet says WE ARE PROTESTING THE WHITE MINORITY GOVERNMENT OF SOUTH AFRICA WHICH IS HOLDING A CONFERENCE IN THE MADISON HOTEL TODAY TO ENCOURAGE U.S. CORPORATIONS TO INVEST IN APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA.
