The press release says a committee is organizing a boycott and protest of the upcoming Davis Cup tennis tournament featuring teams from the U.S. and the Republic of South Africa. A peaceful protest will be held on Saturday, April 16 at noon at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. On Friday, April 15 and Sunday, April 17, picket lines will also be held there starting at 11 A.M. These actions are necessary in light of South African's policy of racial discrimination in sports. Two sponsors of the demonstration, Harry Edwards (professor at UC Berkeley and of the 1968 black Olympic protests) and Dennis Brutus (president of the South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee) have noted that South Africa has been barred from Olympic competition since 1968 due to its discrimination against black athletes. As recently as July, 1976, South Africa has been banned from all international competition in track and field, soccer, and swimming by the international bodies governing those sports. While black people in South Africa are denied their basic human rights, all sporting events with South Africa should be cancelled.
