The press release says ARENA, the Institute for Sport and Social Analysis, announced that it is joining a coalition of groups attempting to stop the South African Davis Cup Team from playing the United States team next month. The matches, scheduled for April 15-17 at Newport Beach, California, violate United Nations resolutions which call on all countries not to engage in sports competition with teams from South Africa as long as South Africa does not have complete sports integration at home. The vast majority of South Africans are denied the chance to compete freely solely because they are not white. ARENA calls for the cancellation of this event and of all sports competition with South Africa until apartheid sport has ended. Dennis Brutus (President of the South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee), Harry Edwards (leader of the Olympic Project for Human Rights), and Richard Lapchick (Director of ARENA) have been laying the groundwork for an intensive campaign aimed at isolating South Africa in international sports by the 1980 Olympic Games. The coalition being formed will include major political, church and activist groups in the U.S. Also, an attempt is underway to create an International Advisory Commission to End Apartheid Sport that will include the leaders of the world's major anti-apartheid groups. Specific plans will be announced at a press conference in May.
