The mailing is an invitation to join Rhode Island's religious community for "Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope: Montgomery . . . Soweto . . . The sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Allan Boesak, the prominent black South African religious leader, and Jim Wallis of Sojourners Community in Washington, D.C. People of the different religious traditions will join in expressing common concern about the evils of apartheid in South Africa and of racism and bigotry in the U.S. The service will also be an occasion for us to resolve to take individual and collective action to end both apartheid and U.S. racism, and to promote healing, reconciliation, and unity through correcting the severe economic and social imbalances these evils have produced. The suffering of the black majority at the hands of the white minority in South Africa and the ghettoized poverty and despair afflicting racial and ethnic minorities in our own communities have gone on far too long.
