The program describes the student uprising in Soweto on June 16, 1976, where 20,000 African students marched to protest making the Afrikaans language compulsory in black schools. A South African judge's investigation found that police opened fire after some youths threw stones, first wounded a 13-year-old boy and then killing a number of students. The protests grew to encompass the full range of black grievances against apartheid. In 1977, boycotts and unrest grew after Steve Biko was killed while in detention; the government had detained scores of people and banned 18 Black Consciousness organizations. Sponsors of the Interfaith Service are Advocacy, Justice, and Service Department of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches; American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island; American Friends Service Committee; The Baha'is of Providence; Church in Society Committee of the Rhode Island Conference, United Church of Christ; Community Affairs Vicariate, Diocese of Providence; Community Relations Council Executives, Jewish Federation of Rhode Island; Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island; Ministers Alliance of Rhode Island; Providence Monthly Meeting of Friends; Rhode Island Divest; Rhode Island United Methodist Association; and Sisters of Mercy Peace and Justice Office. The program mentions strikes, African townships, funerals, Marti Rosenberg, journalist John Kane-Berman, the South African Students Organization (SASO), and Winnie Mandela.
