The mailing includes a cover letter; THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN SUPPORT PROJECT BASIC FACT SHEET; SUGGESTIONS FOR ZIMBABWE WEEK PARTICIPATION; a letter from Zimbabwe African Nation Union Chief Representative Tirivafi John Kangai to Sandra B. Hill of the Southern Africa Support Project; a letter from Edgar Lee Davis, Jr.; EDUCATION CENTRE-MATENJE; To the "Serious Supporters of the Struggle"; ZIW3A5WE REFUGEE WEEK, JANUARY 29 - FEBRUARY 4, 1979 BY THE MAYOR OF Tiff DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, A PROCLAMATION signed by Marion Barry, Jr.; a letter from Malak El Chichini, Assistant Regional Representative, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to Sandra Hill; and letter from Vincent E. Reed, Superintendent of Schools to Kathy Flewellen. The cover letter says Zimbabwe Week is coming, March 9th through March 15, 1980 and we hope you will join us again in our effort to raise funds, medical supplies and educational materials for refugees of Zimbabwe. The cover letter says too few people are aware of the serious plight of southern African refugees; thousands of refugees, 60% of whom are children, have suffered the harsh realities of war: mimings, death and destruction; during the past five years they arrived at camps in Zambia, Mozambique and Botswana poorly clothed, disease ridden and malnourished; in the past, organizations such as the United Nations, the World Council of Churches, organizations like SASP have transported critically need supplies to Zimbabwean refugees. The cover letter says although a cease fire is in existence, our support is still critical; even if the elections are free and fair, and Zimbabweans are given the opportunities to select a government of their choice, the struggle will not cease; because of the difficulties of postwar reconstruction most refugees will remain in neighboring countries, and their resettlement will be difficult. The cover letter says "Z" WEEK 1980 will begin on March 9th with ZIMBABWE SUNDAY and an evening Gospel Benefit Concert with participating churches taking up special collections; other activities include fundraising radiothons on WHUR-FM, on March 10th, WPFW-FM on March 12th, and several film and community forums; further, this year the D.C. public school system is incorporating educational materials on ZIMBABWE WEEK and Southern Africa into the school curriculum. The cover letter says the success of these actions depends on involvement and support from the entire local community so we are asking you to get involved in the work of tl1e project; the Southern Africa Support Project meets every Tuesday, 7:30 PM, Room 1010, Howard University's School of Engineering.
