Agenda of the Southern Africa Working Group meeting of August 6, 1985 in the United Methodist Building. 1) Update on Conferee/Congressional Action on Sanctions Legislation; 2) Report on the Clark Amendment defeat; 3) Report on the Foreign Aid Bill, e.g. Aid to Mozambique and ban on South African coal and uranium imports amendments. The sanctions legislation conference committee is meeting starting on July 31; it may meet for only one or two days, so Congress might vote on the legislation before the scheduled August 3 recess. Please call the conferees urging them to support a bill stronger than S.995 and closer to H.R. 1460, including: 1) no new investments in South Africa (including no bank loans to the private sector), 2) a ban on Krugerrand imports, 3) the stronger House bill language on the banning of computers and no U.S./South Africa nuclear cooperation sanctions, and 4) no Sullivan Principles. Also, there should be no 18-month delay on imposing sanctions, particularly in light of the recently declared "state of emergency." tTe Free South Africa Movement has declared August 12 a National Day of Mourning for the victims of South Africa's stepped-up violence against opponents of apartheid. There will be a mock funeral procession from 15th and Constitution Ave. N.W. to the U.S. State Department, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m.
