This fundraising mailing focusing on building support for H.R.1580, introduced by Rep. Ron Dellums (D-Cal.) and co-sponsored by 54 House members, which is now before the House African Affairs Subcommittee. This bill is much stronger than the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. South African leaders including Archbishop Tutu, Winnie Mandela and others have been urging us to strengthen U.S. sanctions. The Dellums bill would prohibit any U.S. citizen or corporation from making or holding any investment in South Africa; bar the import of any article grown, manufactured or produced in South Africa except for strategic minerals; prohibit South African aircraft from landing in this country; and prohibit the import into this country of Krugerrands or other gold coins minted in South Africa. Also, the bill would prohibit the U.S. military or intelligence services from engaging in any form of cooperation with the South African government, at a time when the Reagan Administration's foreign policy adventurism and covert operations are out of control. People are asked to sign and return a petition addressed to members of Congress.
