This legislation, H.R.21 and S.507, will prohibit any U.S. citizen or corporation from making or holding any investment in South Africa; bar imports of any article grown, manufactured or produced in South Africa, including diamonds (with an exception for strategic minerals); prohibit any U.S. goods or technology from being exported to South Africa, including nuclear materials or assistance; prohibit South African aircraft from landing in the U.S.; prohibit imports of Krugerrands or any other gold coins minted in South Africa; and prohibit the U.S. military or intelligence services from any cooperation with the South African government. Passage of this bill will prompt Great Britain, France and West Germany to impose stronger sanctions, as well, which will increase pressure on the Botha regime. In cooperation with the Free South Africa Movement, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other black South African leaders are mobilizing private and public sector leaders with an event titled the AMERICAN FORUM ON SOUTH AFRICA. This forum, to be held on Capitol Hill on May 17, will bring together Members of Congress, business, professional, religious and civil rights leaders and White House staff. It will put the South African government's atrocities back into the news and will reach millions of Americans, energizing their demands for tougher economic sanctions. Archbishop Tutu and other leaders will also meet with President Bush to urge him to support passage of The Anti-Apartheid Act of 1989 and also to put pressure on leaders of other Western countries to impose tougher economic sanctions.
