This fundraising mailing reports on Free South Africa Movement activities during the last year, including more than 100 speaking engagements on college campuses, increased lobbying pressure on Capitol Hill, expanded divestment actions, launching of the Southern Africa Media Campaign, the "faces behind apartheid" ad campaign, and the presidential candidate accountability campaign. A series of rallies, demonstrations, and media spots are planned in coming months. An increasingly aroused international community is tightening economic and political sanctions against the South African government. We continue to lobby Congress on a number of issues: an end to sharing of intelligence between the U.S. and South African governments; a halt to military attaches being posted in the U.S. embassy in South Africa and South African embassy in the U.S.; prohibiting U.S. oil companies from shipping, storing, refining or in any way serving the South African market; and closing loopholes to sanctions being sought by corporations and the Reagan administration. Thousands of South African children have been jailed without charge, bail or trial during the past year. Hundreds remain in jail; we must keep pushing for their release. Although South Africa invades, occupies and bombs the frontline states at will, these countries are rebuilding and standing firm in their call for sanctions. The U.S. House of Representatives had voted to provide at least $250 million to these states over the next five years -- a blow to South Africa's plans in the region.
