This collection of quotations, poems, proverbs, photos, and official statements was published to commemorate the first anniversary of the assassination of PAIGC leader Amilcar Cabral, whose writings on the significance of culture to revolution inspired the original program. The Chicago Committee for the Liberation of Angola, Mozambique and Guinea (CCLAMG) provides material and financial aid to MPLA, FRELIMO, and PAIGC, works to end U.S. military and economic support of Portuguese colonialism in Africa, and helps clarify the links between the struggle of people in Africa and our struggles for a better life in the United States. On September 24, 1973, Guinea-Bissau declared its independence from Portugal, and by November, 74 nations had recognized the new republic. The declaration of independence culminated five centuries of militant struggle, and follows a ten-year war against Portuguese rule, led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). The declaration came at the first meeting of the newly-elected National Assembly held in the southeastern region of Boe in liberated Guinea Bissau. The 120 delegates had been chosen in popular elections held throughout the areas liberated from Portuguese control. The Assembly adopted a constitution establishing a 15-person Council of State, headed by Luis Cabral, Deputy Secretary General of PAIGC and brother of the late party leader, Amilcar Cabral. The pamphlet includes quotes by Franz Fannon, Basil Davidson, Amilcar Cabral, Lucretta Andrade, and Anna Marie Cabral and a poem by Langston Hughes.
