In contrast, South Africa encourages tourism to promote Sun City, an opulent palace of gambling and prostitution. South African Airways, a state-owned airline, is the only official representative of the South African government in the Bay Area, and its promotion of tourism brings millions of dollars into South Africa. "Air Apartheid" has direct ties to the South African military, transporting troops to the battlefront in Namibia. South Africa could not survive long without the huge economic and (covert) military support it receives from the United States; U.S. corporations like IBM, Chevron, and Ford have invested more than $15 billion in South Africa and provide oil, high-tech support, and financial backing for its economy. U.S. support for South Africa is deeply rooted in the white supremacist character of the United States, whose economic foundation was based on the African slave trade. African resistance is growing; thousands of Azanian (Black South African) people are defying banning orders, martial law, prison, and police bullets, led by the liberation movements (African National Congress (ANC), Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), and South West African People's Organization of Namibia (SWAPO). Cutting ties between the U.S. government and corporations would greatly weaken the racist system. Shutting down South Africa's air links is part of the international effort to isolate the racist regime. This brochure was apparently produced by Freedom Rising! Africa Solidarity Committee.
