Leaflet issued as part of a campaign to strengthen the City of Oakland's Divestment Ordinance. The current version of the Oakland City Council's divestment ordinance is so flawed that it should not be passed. The Bay Area Free South Africa Movement (BAFSAM) urges people to attend the Council work session on May 23, 1985 and oppose this proposal. BAFSAM advocates complete divestment from all companies and banks operating in South Africa. The Council's version uses the Sullivan Principles as the measure of whether companies are being responsible in their operations there. The leaflet explains the Sullivan Principles, a voluntary code of conduct for U.S. firms operating in South Africa, including non-segregation in the workplace, equal employment opportunities, comparable pay, improved working conditions, and training programs. The updated "Amplified Principles" require signatories to actively oppose apartheid within the political system of South Africa. The 128 U.S. companies that have signed the Sullivan Principles employ only 20,000 blacks - 0.1% of the black work force. The Sullivan Principles have been used to deflect of criticism; companies can sign the principles to show that their intentions are good and then do nothing.
