In December, members of Intl. Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) Local 10 in the San Francisco Bay Area refused for 11 days to unload South African cargo. Trade unionists from the AFL-CIO, Teamsters and ILWU have carried on with daily picketing at the Pacific Maritime Association, which contracts to shipping companies doing business in South Africa. Under pressure from unions, community and religious groups, the Oakland Port Commission on January 8 declared as its policy that trade with apartheid South Africa is "morally repugnant"; two weeks later, the Port Commission was forced to "look into" the possibility of closing the Port to South African cargo...
