Zaire has been used by the U.S. to break the isolation of Israel imposed by Africa, including Mobutu opening diplomatic ties with Israel. Over 2,000 South African marchers on August 15, 1982 in the small town of Graaff Reinet for the unveiling of the tombstone of the late Mangaliso [Robert] Sobukwe, founder and past Chairman of the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC). Nombulelo Maphoyi, of the PAC's Women's Section, participated in a program at the UN on the Day in Solidarity with the Women of Namibia and South Africa. The Material Aid Campaign for ZANU and the Women's Committee Against Genocide cosponsored programs in New York City and in Boston. PAC Chairman Pokela spoke to African Heads of State and Government in Tripoli, Libya. A year ago, worldwide protests against the South African Springboks rugby team included a demonstration at Kennedy Airport as the team was leaving the country, after which four activists were jailed. Attacks by U.S. imperialism to destabilize Zimbabwe and other front-line states have escalated since the ZANU put forward a three-year program of National Transformation. On August 13, 1982, the Material Aid Campaign for ZANU organized a demonstration at the South African mission in New York City in support of the Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA). The U.S. government assaulted and arrested activist Rose Fahey. Six weeks before, police attacked a demonstration at the Zairian mission, breaking one woman's arm as they arrested her and two others. On August 23, four whites, dressed in South African army uniforms, were killed by the Zimbabwe National Army inside Zimbabwe near the border. These troops were former Rhodesian Army members and were found carrying plans to blow up the railroad between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The newsletter also mentions NRM (National Resistance Movement), the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), Comrade Biondo, the Azanian People's Organization (Azapo), Anti-Springbok-5 Defense Committee, the Free Azania Campaign, President Samora Machel, Commander Rex Nhongo, ZAPU (Zimbabwe African People's Union), Fifth Brigade, North Korean forces, Prime Minister Robert Mugabe, the Rhodesian Front, Mary Patten, Margo Pelletier, Even Rosahn, Tim Blunk, and Dr. Herbert Ushewokunze.
