Letter send to Kathy Devine of the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid from Ann M. Werboff, National Organizer, Shell Boycott Education Project. The letter says as we discussed, I would like to ask your assistance in organizing the participation of labor in the delegation that will meet with American National Bank and Trust of Chicago. The letter says as you may know, we have joined forces with the American Baptist Churches and the Comptroller of New York City, Harrison J. Goldin, to attempt to convene a special meeting of Royal Dutch Petroleum Co. (the 60 percent owner of Royal Dutch/Shell) in order to vote on a resolution calling on Shell to leave South Africa; according to Royal Dutch Petroleum's Articles of Association, such a meeting is possible if the owners of ten percent of the outstanding shares--26.8 million shares--agree. The letter says this action was necessitated by the company's refusal to allow a vote on this issue at its annual shareholders meeting. To date, nearly five percent, or $1.4 billion worth of stock, has been committed by public employee pension funds, religious institutions and several large banks. The letter says in the next few months, we are planning to meet with several large institutional shareholders to seek their support of this initiative; one of these is American National Bank and Trust of Chicago, which held 959,928 shares as of the third quarter of 1987; we plan to arrange for a broad delegation of labor, church, civil rights and community leaders to meet with American National Bank; we would like you to assist us in organizing the labor aspect of the delegation; please let me know as soon as possible which labor leaders the labor coalition suggests for the delegation; I will contact the bank to set up the meeting at a time that is convenient for the members of the delegation and the bank officials. The letter says I am enclosing background information on the shareholders initiative for your reference.
