Letter to Kathy Devine of the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid from Ann M. Werboff, National Coordinator, Shell Boycott Education Project and Kenneth S. Zinn, Deputy Administrator, Office of Corporate Campaign. The letter says the National Shell Boycott Campaign begins its fourth year with growing support, increased activity and several important victories. Local boycott coalitions have been active in many cities across the country conducting pickets, rallies, and marches to build support for the Shell Boycott. The letter says groups in Boston and Berkeley have been especially successful: on December 13, Mayor Raymond Flynn issued an executive order to prohibit Boston from purchasing Shell products, and the Berkeley city council passed a resolution declaring Berkeley a "Shell-Free" city. The letter says given this increased attention, it is vital that we come together to plan a coordinated strategy around the Shell Boycott in 1989; in addition, we will again be faced with intense lobbying from the oil companies on the sanctions bill and, as such, need to more effectively incorporate our work on sanctions, especially the oil provision, into the Shell Boycott Campaign. The letter says on Saturday, January 28, we would like to invite you to a day-long strategy meeting beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Washington, D.C. to develop a coordinated plan of action in support of the Shell Boycott and the oil embargo against South Africa; the meeting will be unprecedented for the Shell Boycott because it will bring together local grass-roots organizers from across the country who have been active on the Shell Boycott; the meeting will be by invitation-only and will be limited to approximately 25 people in order to maximize discussion and encourage an evaluation of past strategies. The letter says we have limited funds available to pay for your round-trip airfare and two nights' stay in a hotel (Friday and Saturday nights). The letter says we must get confirmation of your participation by Wednesday, January 11, at the latest, in order to have sufficient time to make plane reservations. The letter says please contact Ann Werboff at (202) 842-7352 as soon as possible to confirm your participation in the meeting; we will send you further information, including an agenda, in the next few weeks.
