Kathy Devine communicates about the administrative needs of the Network, given what her role has been. Hiring a half-time staff person would only make up for the work she did the last three years. The Steering Committee needs to pick up some additional responsibilities. The current situation is the result of successes in building a larger coalition than we anticipated. There are now several glaring weaknesses. The Network has been unable to mobilize large numbers of people to get out for events, even with lots of advance time. Our greater strength lies in going to union events and giving educational programs. The Steering Committee has given this top priority in the past, but events overcame us, such as the Mandela release and his visit to the U.S. and the City Council sanctions fight. While we organize events, we tend to miss the longer-range opportunities to put on educational programs. Such events include demonstrating several times a year at the South African consulate (which we have done for the last three years), Soweto Day, and South African Women's Day. The easiest way for the Network to raise money is simply to ask unions.
