Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid mailing to labor union leaders signed by Johnnie Jackson, President, Chicago Chapter, Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW); Jack Parton, Director, District 31, United Steelworkers of America (USWA); and Bill Stewart, Director, Region 4, United Auto Workers (UAW). The mailing says the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid has reason to be proud of its activities for the past three years; the work of the ILNAA to create a network of labor affiliates to educate and activate its members in solidarity with South African trade unions has been a success. The mailing says the ILNAA has informed a broad spectrum of unionists on the struggle in South Africa to build the labor movement, to create a new democratic South Africa, and to end apartheid; South African unions need international support. The mailing says we now have to move our work to a new stage, and will soon hire an administrative assistant to facilitate our work; we need your help to meet this necessary objective. The mailing says we must meet our budget of $26,000; when informed of the need, USWA District 31, UAW Region 4 and AFSCME Council 31 immediately responded with $2500 pledges each; other labor affiliates have responded with generous donations. The mailing says the ILNAA has now raised over $11,000; several organizations have also offered to help defray some of the in-kind expenses listed in the prospective budget. The mailing says there is work to be done; information and support activities of ILNAA's member unions must continue; the violence has to be explained and understood - which means circulating statements from South African trade unions which explain that the violence against the people is political and not tribal; much of the attacks are targeted at trade unions. The mailing says we must continue SANCTIONS - especially as trade unionists, who realize that in a bargaining situation, one must use the best tactics available to produce a fair and honorable settlement.
