Invitation for a reception for Mzwanele Mayekiso on Tuesday, June 11, 1991 at the IFT Building in Springfield, Illinois hosted by the Springfield and Central Illinois Trades and Labor Council, AFL-CIO and the Illinois State Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. The invitation says Mayekiso is a South African community leader in the struggle for a united, non-racial democracy. The invitation says Mzwanele Mayekiso, Organizing Officer of the Alexandra Civic Organization, will speak on the current situation in South Africa. The invitation says Alexandra is one of the oldest, poorest black townships in South Africa, with 350,000 residents crammed into its overcrowded and unpaved streets; the community's resistance to apartheid and the development of mass alternative democratic organizations have long made it a target of brutal government repression. The invitation says Mzwanele is the brother of union leader Moses Mayekiso and was a co-accused in the Mayekiso trial, in which the Mayekisos were charged with treason and subversion for their community and union organizing work; in 1989 they were acquitted, after 3 years in prison, following a massive campaign in South Africa and in the international labor community in which many Illinois unions participated. The invitation says contributions should be made payable to the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid. The invitation says RSVP: Hewitt Douglass/AFSCME Local 2000. The invitation discuses AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees).
