The press release says the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid (ILNAA) endorses the Chicago-Alexandra Sister Community Project. The press release says the talk of "reform" in South Africa is meaningless; nothing has been done to remove the pillars of apartheid, such as the Group Areas Act and the Population Registration Act, or to improve apartheid education, or to lift the 4-year-old State of Emergency, or to remove security forces from the black townships; the apartheid system is a heinous crime against humanity and cannot be reformed; the II.NAA supports the movement for a democratic, unified South Africa based on the principle of one person, one vote. The press release says the Chicago-Alexandra Sister Community Project will strengthen the democratic community structures that have emerged inside South Africa alongside democratic trade unions; these democratic structures provide forums for black residents in SA to participate in the country of their birth where they are denied the right to vote and much more; these democratic structures are the hope for the future of a new South Africa. The press release says the ILNAA is especially pleased to stand with the residents of Alexandra Township and the Alexandra Civic Organization which is led by metal union leader Moses Mayekiso; Alexandra residents have long been in the forefront of the struggle for democracy in SA; they have long fought for better living and working conditions in the township; Alexandra township residents deserve the wholehearted support of Chicago residents. The press release says the ILNAA is a coalition of local unions that support SA unions, and as such ILNAA is 100% in favor of comprehensive sanctions and responsible disinvestment of corporations from SA.
