Letter to Jack Parton, Director, District 31, United Steelworkers of America (USWA) in East Chicago, Indiana, from Kathy Devine of the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid asking that Parton distribute letter regarding the Alexandra Sister Community Project. United Auto Worker's (UAW) report on the Mayekiso trial and solidarity campaign puts this project in perspective. When the Alexandra Resolution passed the Chicago City Council on April 6, four Aldermen spoke over a loud speaker phone hookup with Moses Mayekiso, and Carl Shier spoke to Moses on behalf of the Steering Committee. The attachment reports on plans for a trip to South Africa; Cole Wright of United Food and Canning Workers (UFCW) will chair the committee and Don Stillman, UAW International Affairs Director, will help with arrangements. Our Steering Committee voted to ask the metalworkers to be our host union in South Africa. The Steering Committee is planning a late November benefit reception with Congressman Ron Dellums; we'd like to have President Lynn Williams as the other featured speaker; Rosetta Daylie, Associate Director of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31, is chairing our benefit committee. On May 12, we'll kick off the downstate branch of the Labor Network; union folks in Danville expect 300 to 400 people to attend. On June 16, the Network will sponsor for the second year a Soweto Day Rally for Sanctions at the Hayes Center, following a Walkathon to raise money for the victims of apartheid in Mozambique. Carl Shier of UAW is chairing our Soweto Day Rally; we have asked Congressman Howard Wolpe of Michigan, Chair of the House Committee on Africa, and Reverend Jeremiah Wright to be featured speakers. The letter mentions Bantustans, sanctions, the Shell boycott, CLUW (Coalition of Labor Union Women), COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions), the Freedom Charter, Conference for a Democratic Future Resolutions, the Harare Declaration, Nelson Mandela, New York Labor Against Apartheid newsletter, CCISSA (Chicago Committee in Solidarity with Southern Africa).
