The campaign of defiance inside South Africa and the international community forced the apartheid regime's hands; political organizations have been unbanned; Nelson Mandela was released; some laws were lifted. Next steps are critical. Mineworkers union leader Cyril Ramaphosa and metal union leader Moses Mayekiso held the doors of the jail as Mandela was released; Mandela turned to the trade unions for his security and safety. Unions have helped put the squeeze on South Africa through many actions - divesting pension funds; walking picket lines; taking up the Shell Boycott, Free Mayekiso and the Sanctions campaigns; and sharing information on worker health and safety. The Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid is focused on building solidarity between unions here and in South Africa and to educate union members throughout Illinois. The Network has an active Steering committee comprised of more than two dozen representatives of union affiliates. The document mentions Nomonde Ngubo, the United Mine Workers, and the liberation movement.
