The reports briefly on the work of the Illinois Labor Network over the last three years to create a network of labor and fraternal affiliates to educate and activate its members in solidarity with South African unions. The negotiations that we hope will soon begin in South Africa to write a free and democratic constitution will need trade union and working peoples' input, so solidarity work has reached a new stage. Kathy Devine, who for three years has coordinated the work of ILNAA without pay, needs an administrative assistant to relieve her of time-consuming, detailed work so that she may perform her income-producing duties (and pay her bills, rent and car payments). ILNAA needs to raise $26, 000 for this purpose. Three pledges of $2,500 each have already been made, by Chairman Jack Parton, District 31 Director of USWA, Bill Stewart, Region 4 Director of the UAW, and Steve Culen, Executive Director of AFSCME Council 31. Several other labor affiliates have made donations, bring total pledges so far to $9,000. Educational work must continue, as well as work on sanctions - especially as trade unionists, who realize that in a bargaining situation, one must use the best tactics available to produce a fair and honorable settlement. The mailing also mentions the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) and AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees).
