Leaflet advertising an event featuring Mzwanele Mayekiso at Court Street Methodist Church in Rockford, Illinois on June 7, 1991, sponsored by the Rockford United Labor, Rockford Area United Auto Workers, Rockford Urban Ministries and Rockford Peace and Justice Committee. Mayekiso, a South African community leader, is Organizing Officer of the Alexandra Civic Organization. Alexandra is one of the oldest, poorest black townships in South Africa, and its resistance to apartheid and the development of mass alternative democratic organizations have long made it a target of brutal government repression. Mzwanele is the brother of Union leader Moses Mayekiso and was a co-accused in the trial in which the Mayekisos were charged with treason and subversion for their community and union organizing work. In 1989, they were acquitted after spending three years in prison as a result of massive campaigns in South Africa and in the international labor community in which many Illinois unions participated. Proceeds from the event will go to the Alexandra Civic Organization. The leaflet mentions Jeff Bronson, UAW Hall, Stan Campbell, and Rockford Urban Ministries.
