A letter of invitation to a national workshop for key grassroots labor activists, in Philadelphia on February 28 - March 1. The workshop will chart the course of locally-based union solidarity work with South Africa. The featured speaker will be Bethuel Maserumule, Regional Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), South Africa's largest trade union, and a leader of the struggle against the union-busting U.S. Crown Cork and Seal Company. The workshop, organized by The Africa Fund Labor Desk, is a response to events in South Africa since Nelson Mandela's release from prison two years ago. South African people have won important victories, including the unbanning of the African National Congress (ANC) and other democratic organizations, the release of many political prisoners, repeal of some apartheid laws, and the beginning of negotiations for one person one vote democracy. These achievements have come at a terrible price; over 5,000 people have died in apartheid violence since 1990, including hundreds of shop stewards, local and regional union officials, and rank and file members. Further, Big Business and the regime have escalated attacks on the labor movement in the courts and on the factory. The conference will give labor activists a rare opportunity to meet each other, exchange ideas and experiences, and discuss unique opportunities and challenges of anti-apartheid organizing inside the U.S. labor movement. The letter also invites Kathy Devine to speak at a session on behalf of the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid.
