Leaflet advertising an anti-apartheid rally on Healy Lawn at Georgetown University on May 2, 1985. The Board of Directors will be meeting to discuss university investments. The leaflet proposes a four-point plan of action for the university: 1) Divest completely and publicly from firms which have economic interests in South Africa, 2) Pool resources of the African Studies Program of the School of Foreign Service, the Center for Strategic International Studies, and the Center for Peace Studies to examine U.S. involvement and make policy recommendations, 3) Create a scholarship fund for black South African students to come to this university for four years or for graduate school, and 4) Adopt a black secondary school or college in South Africa to which we can send books and educational materials. Divestment is the cornerstone of this plan of action. The U.S. must use its economic leverage (20% of foreign investment in South Africa) to encourage the minority government to abolish apartheid; by publicly selling our shares in these corporations, we are putting public and moral pressure on them to reconsider the value of their investments in South Africa. This in turn forces the South African to appraise the value of U.S. investment and the U.S. as a market for their gold and other raw materials. Slogans on the leaflet are SAY NO TO APARTHEID and DIVEST NOW.
