Leaflet advertising a rally on June 16 at the Federal Building in New York City commemorating events on June 16, 1976, when South African police killed hundreds of black children in Soweto who were peacefully protesting use of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in their schools. The regime's violence continues to be a growing obstacle to democracy in South Africa. Since March 1, more than 700 black South Africans, including children, have been killed; death squads trained by security forces continue to terrorize black communities. Pretoria has allocated more than $1.5 billion for covert operations and special forces. The Bush administration has lifted federal sanctions and condoned the killings by its silence. It has given S2.5 million of our tax dollars to lnkatha, a major force in the violence. The time has come to stop violence and racism - from the United States to South Africa!
