South African law defines oil as a "munition of war." The Amsterdam-based Shipping Research Bureau has identified Shell-owned, managed, or chartered tankers delivering at least 23 cargoes of crude oil to South Africa between 1979 and 1982. A common pattern has been for Brunei Shell Petroleum to sell its crude oil to a subsidiary of the Japanese Marubeni Corporation, which then sells it to a trader operating out of Switzerland named Marc Rich. Shell is violating United Nations sanctions and an OPEC-nation oil embargo. More than 70 U.S. organizations are helping to direct the Shell boycott, including the UMWA and the United Auto Workers (UAW), the Free South Africa Movement, the AFL-CIO, the National Education Association, NAACP, National Organization for Women, and the Rural Coalition of 140 citizen action groups. The report discusses why universities, municipalities, labor unions, pension funds, and church investors are moving to divest their holdings of Shell companies' stocks and bonds, and why others are calling for a special shareholders' meeting to address this issue.
