Prexy Nesbitt is the National Coordinator of the Committee to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa, which has spearheaded a nation-wide campaign to stop banks from making all types of loans to South Africa and its apartheid system of racial discrimination. The press release says, as turmoil and arrests of peacefully protesting blacks grow every day, U.S. bank support of the apartheid regime becomes even more significant. Nesbitt will join $top Banking on Apartheid (SBOA) in a major announcement about the Bank of America's involvement in South Africa. He will also be publicizing the Bay Area campaign to withdraw funds from banks making loans to South Africa and its investors. Wells Fargo and Crocker Citizens also make loans for investment in South Africa. The press release says Nesbitt and SBOA will present the West Coast Premier of the film, SOUTH AFRICA: THE RISING TIDE, by Boubakar Adjali. This acclaimed film depicts developments in South Africa today, from the uprisings in the black townships such as Soweto to the white minority government's defense build-up. The film also focuses on U.S. corporate involvement and South Africa's relationships with Namibia and Zimbabwe. It will be shown with the documentary NAMIBIA: A STUDY IN COLONIALISM in Berkeley on October 1 and in San Francisco on October 4. The press release says Nesbitt and SBOA will also be showing the new slide show (with tape), "Banking on South Africa," at various community meetings and exhibiting a selection of posters from the national anti-apartheid poster contest sponsored by the American Committee on Africa (ACOA).
