The letter says religious organizations, campuses, unions, community groups are rallying in support of the South African majority's call to end foreign investments until apartheid has been dismantled and majority rule instituted. On April 17, Berkeley citizens will vote on Measures A and B, which will stop use of their monies to help maintain a regime condemned as a "crime against humanity" and assure that public funds will be invested under socially and economically rational guidelines to meet Berkeley's needs. This is a new avenue for expressing opposition to U.S. bank loans to South Africa, which will be an inspiration elsewhere in the U.S. All Berkeley candidates support the Measures, as do such notables as Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder, and Jane Fonda. Twelve other California cities have plans underway to put similar initiatives on their ballots.
