U.S. investments in South Africa shore up the current regime and thus support the continued existence of apartheid. The petition says it is a desire of the people of Berkeley that all public and quasi-public agencies, particularly the University of California, act to remove investments from banks, other financial institutions, and corporations doing business with the Republic of South Africa. The petition includes sections on the Citizens Committee on Responsible Investment Policy, City Council Action Required, Divestment by Other Public Agencies, Maximum Investment Return, Compliance with Investment Laws, and Legal Responsibility of the City Council.
