The press release says the newly-formed Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid is calling for a march and rally in Chicago on March 18 to support South African union leaders who are on trial for treason, which carries the death penalty. Hundreds of union leaders have been arrested and imprisoned since the apartheid government declared a state of emergency and imposed a news blackout in June 1986. The press release says Chicago Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) President Johnny Jackson said Chicago Alderman Danny Davis will introduce a resolution in the Chicago City Council declaring March 18 a day in solidarity with South African trade unionists; resolutions condemning South Africa will also be introduced in the state Legislature by Rep. Carol Moseley Braun and Sen. Emil Jones. The press release said the Network will step up the boycott of Shell gasoline and work for comprehensive sanctions against South Africa. The press release says the demonstrators on March 18 will march to the South African consulate and present petitions demanding the release of imprisoned labor leaders and other political prisoners.
