Leaflet urging a boycott of the film "The Gods Must Be Crazy." The leaflet says the film reinforces the myth that, in Southern Africa, white people are superior to Black people. South Africa practices apartheid, which is institutionalized racism. Filmmaker Jamie Uys is a white South African who does not call this socio-economic system into question but rather trivializes it. The San people (otherwise known as Bushmen), about whom this film is made, are one of the oldest civilizations on earth. The leaflet says black people continue to resist the system of apartheid. The film enhances South Africa's international image and boosts the South African economy. United States government and corporate big shots think that South Africa is a great place to do business, because of the high profits; South Africa is regarded as a friend of the West, which really mean that racism doesn't bother them. The leaflet says the folk responsible for this particular outcry against "The Gods Must Be Crazy" mostly come from Park Slope in Brooklyn. Park Slope was recently the venue for the filming of a South African commercial, advertising a South African brand of liquor, to be screened in South Africa. We demonstrated against the commercial because it was an apartheid-sponsored enterprise. Slogans on the leaflet include TAKE A STAND AGAINST RACISM and MAKE NEW YORK AN APARTHEID FREE ZONE.
