The brochure says James Madhlope Phillips was born into a working class family in 1919 in Sophiatown - the 'Harlem' of Johannesburg, South Africa; an ANC activist and trade union leader with the garment workers and mine workers unions, he was often called the 'Paul Robeson of South Africa' because of his beautiful baritone voice; using his cultural and political skills to fight apartheid and oppression, he was arrested in 1953 and imprisoned for "inciting the people to sing."
