Leaflet about a series of actions including visits with congressional Representatives at their district (local) offices on June 14, Special church services in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of Soweto on June 15, Washington, DC events on June 16 including a Public Policy Briefing on South Africa and a National Ecumenical Service in Commemoration of Soweto Uprising, and a Day of Witness on June 17. The leaflet says June 16, 1986 has been declared a worldwide day of prayer and fasting for an end to unjust rule in South Africa, by the World Council of Churches and the South African Council of Churches. The leaflet says June 16, 1986 is being commemorated throughout the world as a day of prayer and fasting to end unjust rule in South Africa; you can share in this important event too; we encourage you to take part in initiating the following activities in your area (perhaps working ecumenically), and encourage you also to be part of the national events in Washington D.C. on the 16th and 17th as outlined below. The leaflet says in an effort to support legislation in congress which calls for Comprehensive Economic Sanctions against South Africa, we want as many people as possible in every state to call upon their U.S. congressperson or senator to ask that they vote for the legislation; it is very important that this be done in the congressperson's district; in order to facilitate the organizing of these visits, briefing sheets are being prepared for advocates and will be available from the World Issues Office of UCBWM; twenty-five states have been identified as being crucial to the passage of comprehensive sanctions legislation; we urge you to contact your churches in those states immediately and alert them to the urgent need to start organizing now. The leaflet says our goal is to get as many churches as possible to have special services in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising; you can link the South Africa focus of the services to Father's Day because Apartheid denies many fathers the right to be with their families for 52 weeks a year because of the migratory labor system; resources for worship are available from the World Issues Office and the Africa Office of UCBWM. The leaflet says in the evening of June 16th at the National City Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), there will be a National Ecumenical Service in Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising; leaders of Communions in the USA, members of Congress and the Diplomatic Corps will be invited to attend. The leaflet says visits will be made to the offices of congresspersons on Capitol Hill for the purpose of seeking their support for legislation calling for sanctions against South Africa; we hope to have as many people as possible participate in the Day of Witness; please start organizing now to have a busload come to Washington D.C. from your area for June 16 and 17; the local arrangements for UCC persons are being coordinated by Faith Evans at OCIS. The leaflet includes a photograph by Sam Nzima of Hector Peterson, the first child to be shot dead by police in Soweto on 16 June 1976. The leaflet discusses UCBWM (United Church Board for World Ministries), the Washington Office on Africa (WOA), legislation pending, the World Council of Churches (WCC), the South African Council of Churches (SACC), and the UCC (United Church of Christ).
