The statement says we have gathered today... ... to commend and support the San Francisco dock workers for their long and on-going struggle to live out their love and abiding concern for the suffering peoples of South Africa ... to commend and support their resistance to the nightmare of terror and cruelty which the government of that tragic nation imposes on millions ... to commend and support the most recent merging of their word and deed -- their refusal to work South African cargoes aboard vessels calling at their port. The statement says we have also gathered together since this witness may henceforth result in the most severe and clearly insupportable penalties being levied against the dockers involved -- if not, indeed, against their union; thus, the docker, by reason of a recent finding with respect to the contract under which she/he labors, may now be legally required to work such cargoes; by the same token, she/he may now be subjected to an escalating range of penalties upon a continuing refusal to do so.
