Forty-five staff of various West Coast councils of churches, at their annual meeting, express their gratitude to members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10 for their courageous dock action against South African apartheid. They call on U.S. commerce, investors, and government to follow this example and to quarantine the South Africa economy until apartheid is dismantled. The group of religious organizations' staff call for attention to be given to South African church leader Allan Boesak, who was placed under unjust criminal charges for statements made in fidelity to Jesus. The staff say they will be contacting the ILWU up and down the West Coast to offer specific support for action of their members and will encourage members of their denominations and councils to witness to the South African government as Rev. Walter Fauntroy, other black clergy and ecumenical organizations, and Black members of Congress are doing.
