Leaflet produced by the Ecumenical Peace Institute, Northern California Chapter, Clergy and Laity Concerned. The leaflet says CALC National invites Congregations to join together as Covenant Congregations Against Apartheid. Use this form to educate your congregation and invite them to join this national campaign. The leaflet says the heresy of racism has challenged the Church throughout history; anti-semitism, slavery and segregation have each sought to be justified on religious grounds; despite differences of opinion, each has been decisively rejected aa contrary to the will of God; yet, as if to remind us of humanity's sinfulness and need of redemption, these evils continue to plague human society. The leaflet says today, in South Africa, apartheid seeks to Justify itself by an appeal to religion; it has developed a theology of white supremacy and dominance. The leaflet says in our own nation, racism still poisons our life together, and people of color are still denied the full citizenship and opportunity which should and must be the birthright of all citizens; even in the religious community, voices persist which would deny, condition or delay these moat basic rights. The leaflet says evil cannot stand on its own, but seeks to cloak itself with the mantle of earthly law and divine authority; when these supports are withdrawn, only brute force is left, which cannot long prevail against the power of truth and the yearning of the human spirit for freedom; the religious community may not be able to overcome brute force, but we can deny to evil any semblance of moral legitimacy; the COVENANT AGAINST APARTHEID AT HOME AND ABROAD is one way we as people of faith weaken the forces of racism. The leaflet says invest or deposit our funds only in banks or corporations which do not do business with South Africa or Namibia. The leaflet discusses the Action Guide in the Covenant packet, investments, banks, corporations, Congress, the President, legislation that imposes economic sanctions, a Free South Africa Sabbath, the Free South Africa movement, divestment, racial justice issues, Native American land, religious rights, and voting rights. • A COVENANT AGAINST APARTHEID AT HOME AND ABROAD • ACTION SUGGESTIONS FOR COVENANT CONGREGATIONS
