When Congress discovered this, it passed a law to stop the President and the CIA from intervening in Angola, in hopes of avoiding another Vietnam. However, U.S. and South African involvement had already triggered a bloody civil war in Angola; over the past decade, that war, fueled by continued South African aid to UNITA, has devastated Angola. In July 1985, Congress removed the restrictions on U.S. aid to UNITA, and President Reagan quickly sent roughly $15 million to UNITA, without any formal Congressional approval. UNITA has been attacking U.S. business installations in Angola and will continue to do so using the more accurate and powerful arms and ammunition now being supplied by the U.S. The leaflet says YOU CAN HELP STOP US SUPPORT FOR UNITA AND SOUTH AFRICA! Legislation is now pending in the House of Representatives that would prohibit U.S. aid to UNITA without explicit Congressional approval. Ask your Representatives and Senators to oppose all U.S. aid to UNITA and to support the restrictions on UNITA aid in H.R. 4759.
