The mailing urges organizing for a nationally coordinated campaign to support comprehensive sanctions legislation: HR 1580/S 556 introduced by Congressman Ronald V. Dellums (D-CA) and Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA). The situation inside southern Africa is steadily deteriorating; the apartheid regime of South Africa has continued its internal repression, illegal occupation of Namibia, and war of destabilization in the region. The current limited sanctions have been in effect for one year, and there has been much debate about their effectiveness. In his October 2 report to Congress, President Reagan maintained his anti-sanctions posture and reiterated his same erroneous arguments about how sanctions hurt blacks. The President has violated the sanctions law and not recommend additional sanctions to be imposed on South Africa, so the Congress must again act decisively and do so. Since the passage of the limited sanctions measure last year, the Washington Office on Africa (WOA) has distributed thousands of Action Alerts, Fact Sheets, Argument Sheets, and analysis about the struggle for justice in southern Africa; the WOA has urged immediate and vocal grassroots support for comprehensive economic sanctions. The mailing includes a "Sanctions Action Kit" with a detailed analysis of the President's report, critiques of the Administration's position, an updated Action Alert, and "Support Sanctions flier." The kit can be disseminated to other networks.
