Contents: IS MOBIL REALLY LEAVING? • STANDARDS FOR RESPONSIBLE DISINVESTMENT • Press Statement by NY Labor Committee Against Apartheid. The press release says South African workers at nine Mobil installations went on strike today demand that Mobil negotiate with their union, the Chemical Workers Industrial Union (CWIU), over the terms of Mobil's announced disinvestment from South Africa; Americans should be very clear that CWIU members support sanctions and that their position has been widely misrepresented in press reports concerning the Mobil pull-out; the CWIU stands resolute in favor of comprehensive sanctions and responsible disinvestment even though making such statements is illegal in South Africa. The press release says Mobil's disinvestment is an important symbolic victory for anti-apartheid forces in South Africa and worldwide; in recent years, Mobil has played a leading role in U.S. corporations' efforts to beat back sanctions; but how real is Mobil's disinvestment? The press release says we should not lower our vigilance and rely solely on company statements or media interpretations; an Employee Bulletin distributed to Mobil's South African workers states that GENCOR will continue to produce and market brand-name Mobil products using the company logo; Mobil Chairman Allen E. Murray admitted to the New York Times (April 29, 1989) that GENCOR will have the right to technology and formulae now in use at Mobil operations. The press release says here in New York City, NYLCAA is joining with religious, student and community anti-apartheid organizations in calling for a demonstration at Mobil headquarters on June 16th -- an anniversary of the Soweto uprising; chief among the demands is that Mobil disclose the terms of its sale to GENCOR and enter into negotiations with CWIU. The press release says in New York City, we also have an opportunity to enforce standards of responsible disinvestment in legislation; a new bill, Intro. 1137, now pending before the City Council, will significantly strengthen local sanctions law.
