The Action Alert says South African workers at nine Mobil installations went on strike today to demand that Mobil negotiate with their union, the Chemical Workers Industrial Union (CWIU), over the terms of Mobil's announced disinvestment from South Africa; CWIU's complaint against Mobil has been widely misrepresented in the U. An Action Alert leaflet presumably sent out as a mailing. S. press, which has cast the union's action as anti-sanctions. The Action Alert says Mobil's disinvestment is an important symbolic victory for antiapartheid forces in South Africa and worldwide; in recent years, Mobil has played a leading role in U.S. corporations' efforts to beat back sanctions. The Action Alert says Mobil admits that its sale to GENCOR, a South African mining conglomerate, allows GENCOR to produce and market Mobil brand-name products for five years; the sales agreement also allows GENCOR to use Mobil formulae and technology. The Action Alert asks 1) But is Mobil really disinvesting? and 2) If Mobil is really disinvesting. why won't Mobil negotiate directly with CWIU over the terms of withdrawal? The Action Alert asks people to send letters and telegrams demanding that Mobil disinvest responsibly, disclose the sale agreement to CWIU and negotiate with the union over the terms of withdrawal to Chairman Allen E. Murray, Mobil Corporation in New York. The Action Alert says for more information call Kate Pfordresher.
