Press release about two events featuring Khola Mayekiso, one at United Auto Workers (UAW} Region 4 and one at ACTWU Union Hall. The press release say Mayekiso will speak at a labor reception hosted by UAW region 4 director Bill Stewart; she will speak at a union rally hosted by Jack Parton, district 31 director of the steelworkers union, and president Johnnie Jackson of the Coalition of Labor Union Women/Chicago. The press release says hundreds of local union leaders and activists are expected to warmly welcome Mayekiso at both events which are sponsored by the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid. The press release says Mayekiso's husband Moses, head of South African metalworkers union (NUMSA), has been on trial since Oct. 1987 charged with "high treason" by the apartheid government; Moses Mayekiso was allowed out on bond in Dec. 1988, after nearly 3 years of incarceration, while his trial continues; he served one year in jail before being charged; Khola Mayekiso, whose visit to Chicago is sponsored by the one-million member UAW, is coming as a representative of NUMSA. NUMSA is SA's second largest union and sister union to the auto, steel, sheet metal, machinists and electrical unions in the U.S.; a year ago in Chicago local labor leaders including Bill Stewart, Jack Parton and Johnnie Jackson were arrested at the SA Consulate following their delivery of petitions demanding the release of Mayekiso. The press release says for more information contact Kathy Devine or Evelyn Jones. The press release discusses NUMSA (National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa), the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) and the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW).
