The pamphlet says a former Portuguese colony, Angola became independent in 1975; since that time, Angola has been fighting another war against the South African-backed Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) a counterrevolutionary group led by Jonas Savimbi. The pamphlet says Cuban troops are helping the Angolan army fight UNITA and South African incursions, at the request of Angola's President Jose Eduardo dos Santos. The pamphlet says in 1915, South African troops took over Namibia on behalf of the European Allies during World War I; the League of Nations, the forerunner of the United Nations, granted South Afric:a a mandate to administer Namibia; but the United Nations terminated that mandate in 1966; still, South Africa continues to rule Namibia illegally, and to impose its brutal system of apartheid on Namibia's people. The pamphlet says Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony which won its independence after a lengthy armed struggle, led by FRELIMO (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique) which forms the basis of the Mozambican government; Mozambique has been independent since 1975, but it has also been fighting South African incursions, and a South African-backed insurgent group, the MNR or RENAMO (Mozambique National Resistance); South Africa would like to see Mozambique's government overthrown because, like Angola's government, it supports the antiapartheid struggle; in 1984, South Africa and Mozambique signed a joint peace agreement, the Nkomati Accord; but South Africa has continued to support and supply the MNR and has attacked sites inside Mozambique repeatedly; Mozambique's current President is Joaquim Chissano. The pamphlet says the apartheid government in South Africa is one of the most repressive in existence today; its policy of apartheid has helped to make the whites, who are about 16% of the population, masters over Black South Africans who number 72% of the population. mixed race and Asians who total about 12% of the population also have fewer rights and privileges in the rigidly segregated society.
