Copy of letter to the Foreign Policy Plank Subcommittee of the State Democratic Party Platform Committee urging that it re-evaluate its policy toward South Africa. Party officials maintain that encouraging U.S. economic ties with and investments in South Africa will lead to liberalization of apartheid. This has been proven false; during the past 20 years, the period of the most intensive U.S. investment, inequality and repression in South Africa have increased dramatically. Increased oppression is most evident in the period since implementation of so-called "utopian apartheid" or separate development. This plan calls for de-nationalizing all black South Africans, and Africans of Xhosa, Tswana and Venda ancestry have already been declared foreign nationals. When "utopian apartheid" is fully implemented, no black South African will have any legal claims to social, political or economic rights in South Africa. The Democratic Party cannot fail to notice the increase in U.S. citizen abhorrence of U.S. monies going to South Africa. The Party's foreign policy should now actively encourage and support economic sanctions against South Africa, particularly cessation of U. S. bank loans. The mailing mentions South African Council of Churches (SACC), the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU), the African National Congress (ANC), the Pan African Congress (Pan Africanist Congress, PAC), the Black Consciousness Movement, the AFL-CIO, the NAACP, the National Council of Churches (NCC), TransAfrica, the Legislative Black Caucus, trade union locals, the Northern California Ecumenical Council, and the California Nurses Association.
