The first Tour was conducted in April and May of 1986 in New Orleans, Atlanta and various cities in the Midwest and Florida. The second Tour was in 1987 and focused on the Southeast: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and North and South Carolina. The third Tour, in 1988, was in the Southwest: Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. The Committee decided to undertake a fourth Tour after witnessing: (1) the increasing tempo of warfare in Africa's war zones; (2) decreasing media coverage about the causes of these wars, the reasons why the scope of human deprivation and misery is so severe, and the role of the U.S.; and (3) widespread distribution of propaganda materials to school districts by the South African government as well as the promotion of terrorist organizations as "freedom fighters" by the Bush administration and conservative institutions. The 1989 Tour is taking place in California and Nevada. Speakers include experts on health care, rural development, urban development, cultural activities, a particular war zone or struggle for self-determination; they will also be able to speak about issues common to Africa as a whole.
